TIC: Our Ancestors, Our History and Ourselves - CANCELLED
Our Ancestors, Our History and Ourselves
Description: In this Workshop (2 sessions), participants will be introduced to the methodology of writing about one’s genealogy through the lens of historical context. Each participant will be prompted to identify a defining moment in his/her family's background. Maureen, as the now senior granddaughter of courageous Irish immigrants who came to America during the Industrial Revolution, has been driven by the desire to know and understand why they came, and how they created a new life in a new land. She explains, "I can not know who I am without understanding the conditions, values and decisions that sustained my grandparents as they built a solid future for their children in the USA."
Maureen, a retired history teacher and current Cullman Institute scholar at the NY Public Library, will share information on her process of creating a narrative that combines family heritage, cultural history and personal memoir. Story telling has a long tradition of knitting families together; what a great gift it would be to share your grandchildren.
A follow-up guided workshop will be offered for those who wish to share their own process in creating a family history.
Designed for: Newcomers and novices are welcome
