Throughout music history, music and art have been often intertwined in ways that have created some of the greatest masterpieces of the Western world. How have composers used art as inspiration? And how did such composers transform musical language in order to musically replicate artistic styles? This lecture will examine the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Arnold Schoenberg and their relevance to the Expressionistic movement. Our focus will be on how composers constructed new musical means in order to musically "paint" a particular artistic style. Instructor: Dr. Thomas Cimarusti
