His roommate, eyes popping, leaned against the hotel room wall to avoid the bat that was swinging at an imaginary pitch Ted saw coming in his next game. Arguably the greatest hitter in baseball history, his .406 average is one of the longest and most honored records in a sport obsessed with statistics.
